What We Do

College is more than just attending classes—it’s about learning to balance responsibilities, accessing opportunities, building a network, and preparing for life beyond graduation. These are lessons often passed down from parent to child, but for first-generation students, that guidance isn’t always readily available.

By connecting students with mentors before they even begin their college journeys, we aim to foster long-term relationships where first-generation students can find personalized support and have the tools to overcome barriers, succeed in their education, and pursue meaningful careers.

Our mentors are first-generation college students from diverse backgrounds, including UC campuses, private universities, and community college transfers. They have pursued various career paths, from finance and business to entertainment management, tech, law, and more. We strive to connect mentees with mentors who share their educational journey, professional aspirations, or other meaningful commonalities to create valuable mentorship connections.

Meet the Founder

As a first-generation college graduate, I earned my degree in Sports Management from New York University. Now working in finance, I understand firsthand the challenges first-generation students face in navigating their academic and professional journeys.

When transitioning to college, I realized that success required more than just studying and joining extracurriculars for the sake of a résumé. My involvement in Kappa Sigma, where I served as treasurer, introduced me to the value of active participation. Through the fraternity, I engaged with organizations like WNYU Sports Radio, the Sports Business Society, the Military Heroes Foundation, and the B+ Foundation—experiences that broadened my perspective and exposed me to professional opportunities.

However, I noticed that many of my first-generation peers weren’t aware of these opportunities. The unspoken "rules" of career success—such as the importance of early networking, securing internships, and strategically building experience—are often passed down through generations or learned through mentorship. First-generation students, without access to these insights, are left to figure it out on their own.

I founded First Gen Mentoring to change that. The mission is to ensure that these know-hows, tips, and career-propelling strategies are no longer a privilege passed down by chance but instead shared intentionally. By providing mentorship, resources, and a strong support system, I aim to help first-generation students navigate their paths with confidence and access the same opportunities as their peers.
